Moon phases — tonight, and every phase of 2026

The moon's phase right now, and the exact instant of every new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. These are worked out from the moon's actual motion as the page loads — not looked up in a table that runs out — so the calendar stays right for any year.

Phases of 2026

All times UTC. Your local time may fall on the neighbouring day. Any year from 1900 to 2100 can be shown — every instant is calculated, so nothing runs out.

Full moon names

The traditional English names, largely from farming and hunting almanacs, follow the month a full moon falls in: Wolf (January), Snow (February), Worm (March), Pink (April), Flower (May), Strawberry (June), Buck (July), Sturgeon (August), Harvest or Corn (September), Hunter's (October), Beaver (November) and Cold (December). When a season carries a thirteenth full moon, the extra one is commonly called a blue moon.

How this is calculated. Phase instants come from Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (2nd ed.), chapter 49 — the mean lunation plus the periodic corrections for the sun's and moon's anomalies and the argument of latitude. Results are converted from dynamical time to UTC using a delta-T polynomial. Checked against published values for 2026: most instants agree exactly, the rest within a minute. See how we calculate everything else.

Illumination is the lit fraction of the disc as seen from Earth. Moon age counts days since the last new moon. The phase names in between the four primary instants (waxing crescent, waning gibbous and so on) describe the stretches between them.
